Thanks for all your words of encouragement, fingers crossed that it will be ok. There certainly are a few (about 5) very small leaves on it now which would certainly have died in the frost so they must be 'post-frost' new buds

I've got this Superthrive stuff now, it wasn't that expensive so I will give it a go and see if it does anything. I guess it can’t hurt to use it? From what I understand (although limited knowledge) it has Vitamin B1 which has been suggested as helpful for tree's that are in shock.

I will keep you all posted the progress with regards to any new buds, any suggestions and comments are always welcome.

Thanks,

Just thought I would post an update incase anyone wanted to know. Its been about a month since I got the tree. The weather has but a bit rainy in this part of England with just a few days of good sunshine. The tree has been left out in the garden and only taken in once when we had some ground frost.

I've been using Superthrive some of the time, ut as the weather has been very rainy I haven't really needed to water the tree very often.

The elm hasn't strouted any new leaves and I can't see any buds that look like they are swelling, getting a little concerned now as my maples are in full bloom.

Here is a picture I took yesterday, as you can see the tree is exactly how it was when I posted the first picture. Am I expecting to much in a month? I was hoping to see at least some signs on life by now

Hmmm. And it's still green when you scratch off the bark?

Mine are also still acting dead, btw. But they are green underneath it all...so I'm just trying to ignore it.

I know its tempting to compare trees as far as their progress in leafing out, but it can be misleading. I was worried about a zelcova that was looking dead until last week when I went to a bonsai nursery. They had zelcova that were leafing out and growing branches and dozens of others that had overslept winter.

Thanks for the replies. I just checked a few of the branches again and they definately have a green layer under the bark

I guess its just a case of waiting now then? I was only getting a little worried because my other four tree's have lots of spring growth on them.

My ch elm is just about to start swelling it's buds, and it's going very slowly... The weather recently has been a bit odd, hot in the sun, very cold in the shade, almost below zero at night! Have patience.. By the way, great tree!!

Just another update for thoses of you who are following the story. Its now mid June and the longest day was yesterday. The tree still does not have any leaves but there is a green cambium layer.

Not sure what steps to take. I guess just wait

Can you see any little buds on the branches?

Sadly no buds at all on it. I would have expected at least some buds by now especially as there is a green cambium layer right to the end of the branches
