El Niño

I was listening to NPR (National Public Radio) and they had a segment on El Niño and how it was going to change our weather patterns this coming year. They said it was likely that the North was going to have a mild winter. The south a wet winter, and it escapes me what they said about the coastal regions and overseas. Anyone else hear about this?

The funny thing was that the slant was not about agriculture nor storm watch, but how it was going to affect the airline industry. I guess it is very important for those in charge of buying the fuel, because they know if they should stockpile fuel or buy it when needed at cheaper rates (1 cent savings per gallon.) United is slated to save $25 million if they do the latter.

El Nino has been hitting the west coast for about 10 years now I think. That and La Nina or whatever they are. So far this is trully the coldest winder I have had in oregon for about 10.. maybe 12 years.... (I could be exagerating... but It certainly seems like it)

yeah KZ,
I think they were saying that it was going to be like in '97, when it was at it's worst.

Roboku,
You can do what they do in the Mexican Resorts -- recycled shower water
I don't thing your bonsai would care for that though!

Yes, in Melbourne we are in water restriction mode already. This has been the accumulation of the last ten years with lack of winter rainfall. This has been linked to El Nino effect. We suffered one of the driest winters this year and this has caused our very early water restrictions.

Bonsai are surviving fine at the moment.

A parishoner told me that he had heard the same--that we would have El Nino again this year. He said that what he had understood was that with El Nino if the fall were cold, the winter would be warm. It certainly was here last January. They tell me that there were days in Jan. when it was 60F
