OK here in Adelaide we've had our driest winter in 100 years and I'm not happy about it, of course my reasons for not being happy about it are not really significant when you think about the big picture but nevertheless I've had to curtail my bonsai collecting activities this winter due to the fact that the soil is as dry as a bone, we've had virtually no rain and Spring is only 3 weeks away, theres a few trees out there I've tagged for relocation but the soils so dry I don't want to risk moving them.
I'm not touching any pines or similiar material that needs a rootball but I'm still going to get stuff I know I can safely get without much or any root ball at all, especially the trusty olive ... stay tuned for that dig.

Same thing happened last year in Portugal.
This year we had a usual wet Winter but from October 2004 (Mid Fall) then came Winter and then Spring and until June 2005 (Early Summer) there was about 2 days of rain when there's usually about 3 months of it.

In that year by mid Spring I had already fought about 6 infestations when in a regular year I don't have any worries until Early Summer.

That's climate for us.

It's not just winters, the UK has just endured the hottest, driest July since records began a hundred or so years ago. The only attention my wee trees have had is to ensure they've got enough water, i've refrained from most pruning and pinching so the new growth doesn't get cooked.
