OK,
I figured I'd start this thread on the same basis that Whidn did his. To get to know all of you a little better and maybe to see something different that I hadn't already.

What is the top 5 bonsai you would one day hope to achieve/obtain?

For me, my dream bonsai would be as follows…

[1] A Birch group planting on a slab, maybe a nice dark grey one to contrast the stark white bark of the Birch

[2] An ancient Azelea with bi-colored flowers and hollowed-out trunk; i've seen a picture of this as a child and it has been with me ever since.

[3] A raft planting that spirals up a verticle cliff. The tree would have to be a conifer, maybe an edo spruce, white pine or a utah juniper.

[4] A clump style Maple, Either Japanese or Trident. This one would have to be at least 24" tall.

[5] This slot is still kind of open, maybe some flowering tree root-over-rock. Something like a Pyracantha or Chrysanthemum. Oh, I might have to add Potentilla. Paul just turned me on to that species. I really like that tree of his.

Well, heres mine.

1) An acient Bluce Spruce forest accented with some nice grass, with a little ritual going on inside the forest (I hope to be able to scuplt good enough to make my own little dudes). Never seen one but I can picture it in my head.

2) A Weeping Willow bonsai. (I will soon, the cutting is 2 months old and doing quite nicely.

3) Trident Maple forest.

4) A Blue Moss Spruce.

5) And a Jap. black pine.

Well I'm new to the art so I don't have a defined list of dream trees. Here's a few that are on my ambition list.

1) A aspen forest, high altitude so not sure if they'll work.

2) An ancient trident maple or japanese maple.

3) A maple forest

4) A nice cherry tree or other flowering fruit tree, maybe apricot.

I like almost all trees, but one is a coffee tree, I'm waiting to get some seeds, this trees grow fast...

Another one should be a Hinoki (As the one in the main page here, like 2 feet tall... Mines are still as seeds, so maybe in 10 or more years )

Then I would like a Black Pine, just bought one, I'm still thinking what to do with him... I would like an informal upright...

Then, I would like to get a nice shohin inf. upright Eugenia, already working on it, I'll let it a time in a box to let it thicken...

Lastly, all of my developing trees...

Hi,

My ultimate goal is to make :

1) a very large, thick, gnarly oak (quercus robur) with fantastic ramification and small leaves. Just like Walter Pall can make them.
2) a convincing large ancient natural looking beech (fagus sylvatica) or hornbeam (carpinus betulus) forest planting on a slab.
3) a thick ramified japanese black pine (pinus thunbergii) but I would have to learn how to keep pines alive first. (didn't succeed in doing so until now)

regards, René

Is that the hornbeam in the pic?
It's beautiful.
The older I get the more I appreciate decidious bonsai in winter (could it be it's because I've lost some of my own canopy?).

Hrmm. My top 5? that is hard... umm let me think...

First I think I would like a cascading or semi cascade purple plum in flower....

Last I would like a Scheflerra with some nice banyan rooots.

In between I think I would go for in any order...

Informal Black Pine
Informal Pomegranite or a nicely done jinned shimpaku
cascading/semi cascade crab apple

I however have seen some great tree's I would like, but I think those are main ones..

Huh?

Here are my 5 choices,

1. Really old informal cork oak
2. A thick trunked Japanese Black Pine
3. A old coastal redwood with a hollow trunk
4. A nicely ramified semi-cascade shimpaku
5. A heavy trunk chinese maple with nice ramifacation

Hmm... so many ideas...

1. A monstrous collected Bald Cypress swamp/forest- something on the order of magnitude of 8' long, showing the variations in BC growth forms...

2. A really nice formal upright, preferably japanese Black Pine.

3. a sepcimen collection of all the Texas natives...

4. A Nan Han Bo (Vietnamese rock planting) for my deck...

5. A "gnome's hat" grotesquley exaggerated taper-styled Trident. Already got the start of one...

Hmmm, let's see...

#1: a big (3') fagus sylvatica, european beech, informal, (working on that one...) . Great vibrant spring colour, excellent autumn colour, keeps the autumn colour leaves throughout winter.

#2: a shohin sorbus aucuparia, rowan. 2" caliper, 10" tall. Informal. Again, great spring colour, great autumn colour.

#3: Big larix decidua, larch, group. Must be a least 2' long containing 20+ trees.

#4: THIS ginkgo. Awesome.

#5: A nice fat quercus robur, english oak. All gnarled and twisted, 18" tall. chunky dark pot.

#6: A big stately ulmus procera, english elm. 2' tall, nice big rounded well ramified canopy. Sadly rare now due to dutch elm
disease.

#7: ANY southern/ mountain beech (nothofagus sp. ) from New Zealand. I remember these from when I lived in Te Anau, South Island .

#8: oh, sorry. only meant to be 5. the list could go on and on...

Regards

TB
