Doing Bonsai In The 'Perfect World'
Andy Rutledge gave us some insight as to where he would like to see bonsai go in the future.
Ron Martin also thinks there is room for improvement in the way bonsai is done. If you were to live in the perfect world and had the ability to snap your finger and make things come true, what would you do, or rather how would you like to see the world of bonsai. None of this " All material would be perfect and they would be floating down chocolate rivers ready to be picked up" Keep it realistic, you just have the ability to make it so... I think for most of us, we have no clue as to what we would like to see made better. For the most part, all the things you may want to change could happen today without changing a thing if you had more money...right? Regards, Bonsai-al

Take this test....
1. How many stands do you own? 2. How many reed matts do you own? 3. How many accents from last year do you have? 4. How many trees ready to be showed in short notice do you have? 5. How many scrolls do you own? 6. How many exhibition pots do you own? 7. How many Suiseki do you own? 8. How many bronze ( deer, grasshopper, crane) do you own? These things are things that takes no changes in the way bonsai is done in America. These are things that can be done on your own and dramaticly improve the way your bonsai are displayed. Here in America we have no idea how to put together the correct artistic package that makes bonsai artistic. We fumble with incorrect tree slabs, rusty oil barrells, saw blades, or statues of ancient sculpture. These things may make a small statement for the short time, but go little ways towards making a significant impact world wide. We have to get the basics out of the way first. Buy the correct pot, Buy the correct stand. Buy the correct accent pieces. Buy the suiseki for variety. If you can't afford to do this, then sell off about 100 of those mediocre plants you keep thinking will be something and make one good plant shine. Best regards, Bonsai-al

"If you were to live in the perfect world and had the ability to snap your finger and make things come true, what would you do, or rather how would you like to see the world of bonsai."
That's easy. In the perfect world there would be a free Japanese bonsai tool in every 12 pack of Budweiser. But you'ld have to drink six of them to get to the middle to see if you got a nice concave cutter or a lousy bonsai tweezer. Instead of tax rebates Uncle sam sends out nice Korean hornbeams [actually grown in Korea]. If you were one of the poor slobs that actually owes taxes you could get cuttings from your neighbors and send them in to pay off your debt. With everyone pulling together we pay off the national debt with hornbeam cuttings. With all the new found money the government is able to institute K-12 bonsai classes in public schools. Most of the kiddies take to it naturally but a few troublesome ones have to watch Andy Rutledge lectures on video til they see the light. Bonsai is absolutely everywhere and they all pretty much look the same, cookie cutters if you will. People are really getting fed up with it at this point. You can drive down any street and see bonsai, bonsai pots, bonsai stands [from the big Al company] anything you want being thrown in the trash. People go on strike to picket city hall to change the names of thier towns from names like bonsaiville, tranquil gardens, penjing hills to names like Chop shreader valley and broken pot station. Well with everyone on strike and no one working the national debt skyrockets. The government mandates bonsai growing illegal and everyone back to work to pay off the debts. So you gotta be careful what you wish for. Sometimes keeping things with in a small group is best. All in jest of course Tony Last edited by Tony : 11-Jan-2004 at 06:08 AM. |

I was suprised when I saw the results on this poll. I would have thought it would be about 100 percent on the top one. I guess I was wrong. Maybe this is an explanation why Japan always stays number 1?

I tend to be more of the "There's room for everyone" school of thought. I do bonsai primarily because its fun. I don't really do them to show. Pretty much the same way that some people jog for fun and some people are serious marathon runners.
Somehow I've never viewed bonsai as competitive, in fact I believe that in any creative process too much adherence to the rules can be stifling. Yes there are alot of mediocre bonsai out there (I sure many would say that some on my benches are) but hey for my target audience (me, myself and I) I like em just fine. just my two cents on the matter.

Tony,
That post was beautiful man, really great especially the first part. Al, I think you know how I fell about the bonsai state of the Union. If not http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthr...&threadid=5254. I think The bonsai world is awesome. By the way I had another 4 hours with Harry Mr. California Juniper today. Life is good!

In the perfect world I would find the perfect yamadori I have been searching for all of these years and be able to carry it back to the bakkie. Tree collecting fortunately is not a committee activity.

Mass produced bonsai would no longer exist.
Bonsai exhibition would be the introduction to bonsai.(as opposed to mallsai) Nurseries that sell bonsai, would have an advanced bonsai person (at least one) on their staff. (non-bonsai nurseries). And with this, be prepared to give beginner workshops as well. Back up what you sell. Accreditation for nurseries, online suppliers, auctions and resources. Whether it is joint effort of national organizations, or one entity such as ABS or another well established club. And alot of what was mentioned by the other members..... Paul (thinkin out loud)
