Which do you prefer? Why?

I am in the process of repotting a shimpaku cascade and playing with potting angles.

Which do you prefer? Any comments?

I am trying to avoid having the top shari absolutely vertical.

Thanks.

Bart,

1st pic is my favourite, but perhaps just putting a little more curve in the lower branch. (FWIW)

I'm with Homey, the first. Seems the tree is best suited to be a semi-cascade tree. that pot is more suited as a semi-cascade pot. A decent match, huh?

For the steeper angle a deeper pot (but not as wide) might be more appropiate.

The second one is much more dramatic. I would try to get the trunk right in the middle of the pot and I would get some curve into the very straight long branch.

Red Leaf

I shall take the easy way out (though not because it was easy!), and agree with Mr. Pall. The pot itself isn't perhaps the best choice for this tree in any scenario, but the geometry of the composition is much more arresting, "dramatic" in Mr. Pall's words, in the second presentation. I also agree with the notion of introducing some movement into that very long, seemingly static branch.

In any case, best of luck.

How about one more choice?

Thanks, Jerry. Now I just have to figure out how to squeeze that pot!

Maybe for the next repot!

Will you be in DC?

Bart,
Yes, I will be in DC and hope to see you there.
I am off to New Zealand and Australia in late April and hope to see some fabulous things there.

Hey Bart,
I like the second angle better. As Walter said, it is much more dramatic.

Thanks for all your help.

I'm going with the steeper angle, and giving that long branch more movement. (As I speak, it's all wrapped and ready to go.) I'm waiting for a little more loosening up, since spring may be just beginning here.

I'll post a picture when I'm done.

Walter, Jerry, and Charles: I'll see you in DC.
