Do you "PAD" train your elms?

This link was provided in another thread. I like the look of the "tight" pad type training.

http://www.dallasbonsai.com/bonsai_...ChineseElm.html

But it looks as if the clipping is just done like a hedge. No real consideration to leaf direction or anything and....possibly (?)...even cutting THROUGH leaves. Is that correct?

One of my dislikes on my present elm is that my keeping the branches flatly trimmed leaves it looking rather like a Christmas tree. From "dead on" it lacks character.

I could certainly "pad" it out very easily if that's all there is to it (clipping to shape) as in the spring, this tree puts out shoots in EVERY direction.

I have to confess that what they call "wrong" would tickle me pink.

I must be dense. That's why I was intrigued with that "pad" styling as it seemed more like a juniper that I somehow manage to not get looking weird.
