Digging Up Azaleas

Hi guys.
Just a quick question. I planted a couple satsuki azaleas in the garden bed about 3 years ago and they are looking pretty good now. I was wondering if I could dig them up this fall or should I wait for spring and if so do you dig before they bloom or after. They're not much more than a foot tall. We have fairly mild weather year round here in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks for any info! --Sandi

You should transplant your azaleas in summer, just before they finish blooming.

Regards,
Matt

Sandi,
Have the azaleas reached a good trunk size that you are happy with? Remember once in a growing pot the the trunk thickness would be be very slow in expanding.

Azalea repot

I just purchased an azalea in a bonsai pot. Should I repot it now into a grow box to give the trunk more girth?

DavidN, I haven't measured them yet, but they look like about 2 plus inches caliper. I'm going to make small bonsai out of them so by next year they should be about perfect. Thanks for the interest. -- Sandi

The quickest way to achieve the trunk size you want is to plant the tree in the ground and feed it well. A grow box isn't as good but it will do if you have no planting in the ground option.

Sandi, excellent as you have a plan of what you want to achieve.
