Pines don't typically have lifelines unless they are very old and some of the trunk has died. They have resin ducts, so there is a good chance the entire surface of the trunk is alive.

For the juniper, it would also need some age to develop a lifeline pattern. Stripping the loose bark with a wire brush may reveal some localized swelling along the path of the lifeline.

You can read some more about this in the Kusamura newsletter:

http://www.gsbf-bonsai.org/kusamura/nov2001/report.html

By the way, it is not necessary to post the same question in more than one place on the forum. It is confusing and difficult to manage. The latest posts are always available at http://www.bonsaiTALK.com or by clicking What's New? on the same page.

Regards,

Matt

This is an area to move gently in. Simply put, you want to remove the exterior bark, and look for the area that is reddish. That is the lifeline.

This layer is very thin and needs to be treated with great caution.

Bart
