Deshojo Maple advice wanted please
Hi,
I am in the market for a Deshojo maple, but before I make a purchase, I’m looking for a bit of advice. I have noticed that with this species, a lot of trees being sold have a lot of growth at the apex, then there is a gap before the next cluster of growth occurs. To my eyes, this looks unattractive and its something that I would like to avoid. So to get to the point, could anyone tell me if growth can be developed between the apex and the next cluster of growth? Or if I bought one that showed this type of characteristic, would it be a permanent feature of the tree?. If I was able to buy a Deshojo, it would be my last purchase of the year, so I’m trying my best to get it right. Any replies would be much appreciated. I have a few deshojo and found that they bud back like any other acer palmatum. They can tend to be heavy where cuts have been made but bud rubbing should alleviate this.
The main problem you get is finding one where the graft is not too unsightly. Also be careful with any frost that can occur in Apri as the leaves can damage easily. Will you be buying from a garden centre or a bonsai nursery ? |

Hi,
Thanks for that information - I wasn't aware that they were grafted. I may go to Bents Garden Centre. Being near Wigan, its not too far from me. There're much better than most Garden Centres, as they employ specialist bosnai people who know what there selling. Stephen |

Hi. the choice of deshojos is huge in the U.K. so I,d look for one without this undesirable trait, however as you guessed in your other post these are only shipped in the dormant season, the absolute cream will already be taken. If I was in the market for a deshojo keeper I,d be looking for an impressive trunk and hopefully nebari and aim to grow on the branching, a lot like this....http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthr...ghlight=deshojo cheers Andrew

In my experience very few recently imported deshojos are grafted.

If you're going to Wigan, then jump on the M6 up to Samelsbury Bonsai Nursey outside Preston. You should get off the motorway at the Tickled Trout, ( not sure of the exit No )

Hi Frank, Samlesbury really is a cool place, really tranquil, Whitepine, when we lived in merseyside we used to do the bonsai run up the A56 (liverpool to preston road) stopping at Ken Shalikers www.pinewoodbonsai.com then moving up to salmesbury bonsai and finally stopping at John barnes windycote bonsai near blackpool before returning on the motorway. From your neck of the woods you could start from the opposite end, lots of general garden nurseries along the way too, including a couple dealing in wholesale landscape trees, regards Andrew

If it's raw material you want, and you'll get the best tree per pound this way,i'd go to john barnes place in lytham blackpool, price wise he'll beat any north~western bonsai trader hands down
