dehumidifier water good or bad

I thought I remembered a thread on dehumidifier water here or there....with no luck on a search here, I thought I would ask.

Would there be any problems with using dehumidifier water to water the trees? I am not sure how it is filtered or what else goes on in the dehumidifier. Did not want to waste water if I didnt have to.

Good or bad?

Basically water from your dehumidifier is distilled water. No beneficial nutrients in it and nothing bad either. It is mostly just pure water. No problems using it.
Just don't forget to fertilize ;o)

Is water in particular short supply where you live?

A somewhat better answer would be "The dehumidifier needs draining a couple of times a day, do I waste this water or can I use it on my bonsai"

I wouldn't use that water exclusively. Trees/plants need a certain amount elements to survive. They either have to get them from the soil or from the water or the fertilizer solutions. Proper bonsai soil won't have much of those basic elements in them so you need to provide them.

I used the dehumidifier water all year. Not exclusively since there was only enough to use that water about every third day. Sure felt good to re-use the water rather than dumping it down the drain.

Why waste it?

Go ahead and use it. It is probably better than softened or, depending on where you live, city water. If you fertilize properly, you won't be depending on the water to provide minerals anyway.

The absence of minerals in distilled water means it has a greater capapcity to flush out minerals in the soil, doesn't it? Wouldn't using it over a couple of weeks cancel out or put a severe dent in fertilization?

Just wondering...

If I'm not mistaken... Distilled water is water which has been heated to the boiling point so that impurities are separated from the water, which becomes vapor or steam at 212 degrees farenheit(100C.). Steam is then cooled and condensed back into pure liquid form. I don't know of any dehumidifiers that do that! Typically a dehumidifier pulls the rooms humid air into the dehumidifier and the air is passed through a cooling coil and is chilled to its dew point on a cold surface where condensation occurs, similar to a refrigerator. I think there is quite a difference.
