Defoliating A Forest!

As I logged on I spotted a picture of my Ficus Nerifolia Forest at the top of the page. It was coincidental, since I spent the better part of the afternoon cutting off the leaves of this monster.

The forest weighs close to 45 pounds and lugging it in and out of my green house (my wife named it my "Tree House") is quite a chore for this old codger.

I decided to defoliate the forest and then put it out doors. I did this with two other Ficus and they are doing very well.

I hate to see the leaves of my trees getting sunburned, so I went at it and about an hour and a half later the job was done.

I am letting a single sucker grow and didn't defoliate it, since I may try to air layer it as an experiment.

The forest is now out doors, and I brought my Black Olive into the corner, where I will carry that outside each day until it is acclimated.

This tree has small leaves, and it not that heavy!

Carl,
Common sense says that the climate in southern New Jersey is much different from the Florida climate. If you defoliated a ficus right now in Florida it would be a stress to the tree because the temperatures are getting very high and growth is about to stop. I am guessing that defoliating your forest now is much like defoliating a ficus down south in late February (which is when most of the defoliation is done).

Charles:
In February all my Tropicals would be in doors!

We are experiencing 60 to 70 degree weather, so I am pretty sure, the tree wont suffer from heat stres.

Most of the trees that I have defoliated were accomplished in Late May or during the month of June...

Hopefully, the forest will have leaves by the middle of July....

Of course, my fingers are always crossed!!!

Carl.
Just one thought on the hours spent defoliating your trees, why?
Seriously, one option is to just put the tree out into its sunny position in the summer. The leaves will all burn, the tree will look terrible and then in about ten days they will all fall off!
I did this with a large F. microcarpa each spring-summer in Michigan. Of course this should only be done with a healthy tree no matter how one wishes to defoliate.

Hi Jerry:
I know you had previously mentioned the fact that the leaves will sunburn and then be replaced, however I had never seen the structure of the many branches on this forest.

I decided this would give me a chance to view the structure. I ended up removing about 25 per cent of the branches. They were crossing other branches or growing directly under another branch.

Maybe next year.... I'll follow your advice.

Carl,
Yes, give it a try next year and let us know how you feel it works. It sure beats the hours removing hundreds of leaves. But then you will still need to do the thinning out crossing branches and wiring to get the details that you want.
Nice grove of trees by the way.

And that is much easier to do without leaves.

Thank you Jerry and Charles:
I will keep you informed...

By the way, Jerry, I am re-reading your book. It is, no doubt, the best reading and informative book I have read on ficus. A lot of the information, in my humble opinion, will work on all tropicals, not just the Ficus....

Thanks for a great book.
