Shari Jin Treatments?

Is there something other then lime sulfur that I can use to sterilize the shari and jin on my bonsai?

Also, can anyone recommend a good wood sealer/hardener that will not look shiny/glossy?

Thanks

LA,

Though I've never tried it myself, I've read of adding india ink to the lime sulfur to give it a less white appearance (you'll have to test to get the right proportions). A solution of water based white glue and water (again test for right proportions) also works as a preservative.

Regards,

David

Dunno about a substitute for lime sulphur, but it would seem that other fungicides might work. Some folks add various colors of tempura paint (available at hobby shops) to get the color they want.

Do this before sealing the wood. Once you seal it, it is very hard to change color.

I'm about to use black to do the inside of some bougainvilleas that I have hollowed out. Then I'll seal them.

I'll probably use a marine product called "Git Rot". I have seen this work on wooden boats, and believe that it's more powerful than Minwax wood hardener, which I have used in the past. It is my feeling that bougies are more vulnerable than the pines and jupiters on which I have used Minwax.

As for gloss, you need to apply (and let dry) enough coats until there is some left on the surface. Thus will create a sheen that can be tamed with wire brushes or sandpaper.

I've used Elmer's only to temporarily seal *hairline* cracks in pines following bending at the suggestion of a Japanese Bonsai Master. When it gets rained on or watered, it does turn white, reliquify and dribble down the trunk, so I'm not sure how good this would be in the long run.

If memory serves, there were a couple of links in bonsaiTALK Links under Techniques > Deadwood on preserving dead wood.

Regards,

Matt

Matt,

The glue/water solution was recommended by Joe Day at a deadwood lecture I attended this past spring. He says that he's kept very small branches for many years this way. I have not used it long enough to personally say how well it works (I have it on two trees), but Joe has been at this for a long time.

Best Regards,

David
