What's "dynamic lifter concentrate," Nathan? Sounds like a crankcase additive!

Regards,

Matt

Hi Nathan

I don’t think you have given us enough information to tell you if you killed the tree with dynamic lifter (For all you Non-Aussie types, this is a garden fertilizer like blood and bone). I really think if you are a beginner with bonsai or gardening, stick to half recommended strength liquid fertilizers and maybe only once every 3 weeks or more at this time of the year (our late spring) till you understand the plant you are dealing with. I’m not sure of what a mask maple is, I have heard of “Musk Maple” and like all maples in Australia they don’t like the heat much at all. I am in Adelaide and all of my maples are under shade cloth this time of the year (except the trident maples). I use the dynamic lifter pellets and also a fish emulsion liquid. Miracle grow is another good one and Mir-acid for those acid soil loving trees.

I think that your problem may not have been caused by the fertilizer, but when you fertilize a sick tree, it’s not usually a good result. Your maple probably dried out for too long or cooked in the sun or maybe you have it inside and they surely don’t like that either. Its hard to say, put it down to experience and go get an elm or a straight out Japanese maple or trident maple to play with. The exotic maples are just lovely to look at but hard to keep alive (for me anyway!!)

More info please and good luck with the next tree.

Fertilizing trees

Here are some pointers about feeding your trees.
The first thing is that your trees will not grow better if you use more fertilizer. Trees will use what they need and the rest just gets washed out of the pot. If you use a strong enough mixture of fertilizer it will burn the very tips of your root hairs (the feeder roots) and your tree will crash, the foliage will just wilt with out loosing all of its color and not come back.

Feed with your heavest solutions like Miracle Grow in the early spring when your trees are growing the hardest. This is when your tree will use the most food.

In mid summer when the heat hits back off to something lite like fish emultion.

In the fall when your tree is storing energy for the winter use 0-10-10 This helps your tree fill itself with energy with out nitrogen which the tree uses to create foliage. As the leaves are soon to drop the nitrogen is just a waste.

A good general rule to follow is less more often is better. I use an in line injector so that a very little food is in the water every time that I water, I find that I have to water less and that my trees are stronger. This allows me to use defoliation and needle cutting techniques that others find difficult or imposible.

Glenn and Juliet, great advice.

Nathan, please provide more information including where the tree was located (inside/outside, in the shade, sun). Also what city are you in? In Melbourne we also struggle with the delicate maples. Even normal Japanese Maple acer palmatum needs protection from the sun and dry winds.
