Darned Rainny days
Not much to do on a cold and rainy day so I thought I would trim up this old jade that I have had forever. At least 13 years.
When I first got the poor little thing it came in one of those 2" nursery pots. If I remember right it was the one and only plant I ever bought from Wall-Mart. Cost all of $1.98 or so. I have trimmed it many times over the years. At one time there was a little old lady down the street that wanted all the cuttings I got off it. I think she rooted them and then sold them at a flea market along with other small plants. Supplemented her Social Security that way I guess. A lot of people have to do that these days. A couple of years ago I moved out of the neighborhood and never gave her another thought. Now I have a 7 gallon nursery pot full of cuttings. Would take them to her but heard she got pretty sick a few months ago. Her son had to come down from someplace in Ohio and take her up there. Last I heard she was in one of those assisted living homes. (a new politically correct phrase meaning Old Age Home.) Not a bad thing. Sometimes one needs to be assisted in life. And her family is nearby. I imagine that they visit her every now and again. The jade is now all set for a couple of years. That is a good thing. Don't think I want to do it again anytime soon. That big nursery can is kind of a sad thing without that old lady rummaging through it. Guess I should have trimmed it a lot sooner. I put out a notice to my club about the cuttings. A couple of people might come by to take a some. The squirrels will more than likely eat a few. They do like them It’s not the same but better than just chucking them in the garbage. If you live in my area and want some then stop by. Plenty of jade cuttings to go around. Might even be a beer or two ;o) |

lol Al caught the same thing I did
![]() how well to jade respond to such hard pruning? My mom has many large ones that I always get suckered into moving in and out every year, reducing them would make the process easier |

Hacking them back hard gets you a whole lot of new growth. I moved my mums big one out this summer and it wasn't happy, started to die back. i pruned past the dead growth and she thought i'd killed it, nothing but the 3 main branches. now, it's happy as larry. covered in hun dreds of small leaf pairs.
