Dallas Bonsai Club Sept 2nd Annual Auction
This was my first visit to the club and what a great opportunity it was. Trees, pots, books and misc. items were there for the bidding. I was lucky enough to get some of everything; felt like a kid in a candy store.
Many thanks to all of the volunteers who helped keep things running smoothly and especially the auctioneer, a pretty funny guy whose name escapes me at the moment. Looking forward to next year! regards, lm |

Larry,
I too benefited from the auction. When I have a little more time this afternoon I will post a few pics of two trees I am particularly happy with. Too bad I did not get the chance to meet you... I may have been the person who signed you in and gave you a paddle, though. And the auctioneer was the current President of the club, Howard Smith. Super nice guy, his wife Sylvia is just great, too. Jennifer

Unfortunately, I couldn't make it. I was in the process of locking up the store when a customer came in to talk to me about a custom design. I wanted to throw her out and tell her I had a meeting to go to, but...gotta sell the jewelry.

So, here are two trees that I picked up at the auction. Don't laugh at the photos! I didn't have a solid background to shoot the pictures against so I did a chop job on the photoshopping. Let's just say that neither photography nor photoshop are my forte.
Jennifer The first one is a Wichita Juniper. I plan to start a design overhaul in the spring and take the winter to really think it through before I touch it. And of course keep it alive. It is about 20" tall.

This second one is a cedar elm. This one is just going to grow wild for a year or two to develop some branches. It is about 26" tall.

I am curious, what is a "wichita juniper"? I don't think I have heard of this variety before. Certainly looks like an interresting tree to work with.

Ralph,
It was auctioned off only as "Wichita Juniper". I did a bit of Googling and found the name "Juniperus Scopulorum 'Wichita Blue'" which is a species of Rocky Mountain Juniper. Its foliage does match the description, very bluish hue. I'm getting itchy fingers. Spring is a LONG TIME OFF. :-) Jennifer

Jennifer,
glad to see you are not getting over zealous with the cedar elm by deciding to wait for a while and let it develop itself first so as to have something to work with. I'm sure you can tell by the photo that the top leader needs to really thicken up in order to blend in with the rest of the trunk. I also forgot to mention when I replied to your PM, to start thinking about what your going to do for your soil. I found a supplier who sells the right size sand should you decide to use that as one of your components. Repotting time will be here before you know it .

Jennifer,
You did a great job at the auction of holding out for the big stuff you wanted. If I was a kid in a candy store, you were a kid on Christmas morning. That Cedar Elm is going to look spectacular. best regards, lm |
