Cypress Knees...

I've been fairly obsessed with cypress trees since some time last year, especially in terms of use as bonsai material. I'm especially intriged by the idea of layering and grafting to a cypress knee to achieve a really thick trunk with lots of taper in a short time. I guess it's not surprising that i jumped at the chance for a job at our local Cypress Gardens. Now it looks like i'll get the chance to test my idea that if successful, has the potential of producing a really nice tree in a relatively short time; for more info all-be-it outdated you can read this thread. I typed up a proposal for permission to perform my experiment and have the ok from my supervisor and just have to finalize it with the director of the gardens. Once i begin I intend to put updates with pictures on here as it progresses. I'm hoping to begin next week setting it up. wish me luck.

I think you should graft and then layer, not layer and then graft.

The reason is that it is the growing buds will promote root growth. Since the knees don't have buds, I don't think they'll layer well until you get those grafts going.

Regards,

Matt

TreeBay has a great point and I agree, take advantage of all those healthy stable roots first, graft then layer would be wise.
