Who's counting?

Ron:

I like your forest.

As for the number, if you have to count once, you have to count twice.

Hence the expression "Can't see the forest for the trees"!

When you need a microscope to see if a rule has been broken, perhaps it's time to ignore the rule.

Maybe while you're in DC you can get a little 'gator to live in it.

Amen Like I said sometimes the rules just plain get in the way of making good bonsai.

I agree with your numbers article.
Forests need to evoke the feeling of... a forest.
I've seen them with all numbers and feel the composition, the rootage, branching and the overall shape, take precedence over how many..
John Naka talked of forests for bonsai as having two views.. one with viewer inside the forest looking out .. ie. larger trees in foreground with smaller trees to the sides and back. The second being outside the forest looking in .. ie. smaller trees in the foreground and the larger trees towards the back. I believe he also stated that after 9 trees composition is the key.
I have a few forests in the workings but like the bald cypress the best..
Here's a recent shot before spring cleanup.. a couple tridents accenting..lol

peace,
tom stoute

p.s. good to see you posting again 'ere at BTALK .. a good home for bonsai people everywhere.

Thanks I do peak in every now and again.
You have had that cypress forest for a while haven't you. You have done wonders with it.

Hopefully the whole article will eventually wind up in the ABS Journal.
It is also destined to be a handout in my forest classes.
That is if I ever get it done. Been working on it for a long time ;o(

Started again on my cypress forest. Did a bit of clean up so I could get some wiring done. But when I got done with the trimming I liked what I saw. No wire needed. ;o)
The branches need to thicken up a bit and maybe the outside edges of the foliage needs to be cleaned up a bit but I think I'll stop at that.
Cypress knees are popping up in a few places. (picture 2) That is pretty cool I think.
As soon as I can get 4 or 5 people together to help move it I'll put it in my display area. Then I will start on some kind of ground cover for it.
Forest might be a misnomer. I am doing my best to make it look like one of our local swamps. There is a difference. That will make the ground cover a bit tricky. It needs to look a bit dark and foreboding.
