Cypress - Air Layering
how easy is it to air layer cyprss do you just cut of the bark put rooting hormone on and put moss around then cover with plastic and wait or have i got it all wrong

Buzzy; You need to supply more information with your questions if you want good answers. Which Cypress are we talking about. Also your techniques are correct but could use some refining. If you attempt to do airlayerings by just ringing the tree limb and adding hormone directly to the cut and wrap spagum moss with plastic you will get some roots but likely not what you would want for bonsai. It is also importiant where you intend to create your roots if you want good bonsai.

sorry , im not to sure what sort of cypress it is, its just growing in my back yard.what are the ways to get a good root system for bonsai's.The place where i intend to try to get the roots to grow is about 3 inches below where the 1st branch starts.sorry about not enough info still learnibg.

The experts down here in OZ recommend only two methods to use to achieve air-layers. The first one is the one that has been described as above. This provides success very often but sometimes won't get the roots in the right place. The other method is cutting a grove around the trunk, like ring barking but not as wide and then wrapping wire tightly inside that grove and then wrapping spagnum and plastic as above. They say that this method provides a nicer root spread that is uniform around the trunk. David |
