Cutting an Elm branch
Here is an american elm in a pot and in the ground. I would like to remove the right branch but don't know if I might ruin the look of the tree. Its 7 feet tall and am not sure what to do. I would apprieciate everyones knowledge on this and comments.
Thanks Peace Bob

If you're asking about training it for bonsai, you'd probably be cutting it back at some point to around a foot tall, It looks like that fork is up around 2-1/2 feet, so what happens above the future cut really doesn't matter so much. Having two branches up there really isn't going to hurt anything. If you want it to get thicker, let it go. If you want to get taper you'd have to cut it back progressively, or develop some low sacrifice branches to help build taper.
I don't know if you are asking about using it as a garden or patio tree. Where is the pot, is it buried in the ground?

Treebay,
Yes I will want to train it into a Bonsai. The pot you can kinda see and it is red. Your right on about its height, 26 inches. I will leave the fork and cut right above it. I left it in the pot so it would be easier to dig out. I would just cut the big roots off that hopefully will grow out of the holes in the pot. I enjoy your comments that you give, I bet you give great talks at bonsai clubs. Peace Bob

Hi Robert,
At this time, why do you want to cut it? And if you do cut it, why would you cut it so high? Regards, Matt

Very few things kill american elm (other than the dread fungus). Pick the height of the tree that you want it to be (let's say 21") and then cut it to about 1/3-1/2 that height. You can do it at just about any time- the ones we cut back a few weeks ago (trying to kill out of "flower" beds), have already budded back and responded nicely. If you are more conservative, cut them back in the fall, and get ready to manage all of the sprouts that appear and appear and appear...... John
