Crystals on top of soil?
I seem to be getting some flakey crystals on top of the oil of my maple. It looks kind of like dandruff!
Any idea what could be causing this, and if it will cause problems? I fertilize every 2 weeks so I don't think salts should be building up...? Cheers, AP |

It probably isn't fertiliser salts, most likely it is limescale. Every time you water your trees and they dry out in this hot weather the solutes in the water are left behind (mostly calcium carbonate). To the best of my knowlege this isn't harmful unless it's on ericaceous plants as it can slightly raise the pH of the soil.

Thanks Al, I hadn't thought of that, it does seem very likely. I'll keep an eye on it!
