Could somebody please tell me what this Japanese garden feature is called.

I wish to do an image search for this but I'm not sure what description to search under.

I believe its a feudal Japan Torii arch (prayer gate).
Goog that and you should get some hits on feudal Japanese history.

And, just FYI, the red ones are in front of shrines. The plain wooden ones are for non-holy places. (Or so I was told, AFTER I put up our nice front page for San Pu Kai) Sigh.

Here's a pic of one of the tori gates at Meiji Jingu Shrine in Tokyo. The massive upright sections are each a single, large cedar trunk.

Ozzy,
They are supposed to indicate the presence of a Shinto Shrine. Without the connection, you might be better off designing a gate of your own using Japanese influence without treading on religious symbols. Then, it also would be an original and not a copy which you could be proud of.
