Cotoneaster - Too Late For Styling?
I just saw two reasonablt marked down Cotoneasters at the local flower shop today. About $5-6. They are not super-material, but since I'm still very much in learning I thought they might be good learning "trees".
Is it to late to bring them home and start cutting away now, should I wait til spring? I'm thinking of making a cascade or semi-cascade following directions in Colin Lewis' book The Bonsai Handbook.

If you don't thing that they are super material but would like to get some practice with them get them and let them grow for a bit. By the time spring comes around you might see something completely different than you originally thought or they might just look better than they did. So if ya want practice go for it.

I agree, I would go for it as well. Shape them up a bit for practice but leave them in the container they're in until spring.
I just picked up a blue star juniper for $5 to play with myself. JP

Ah, a blue star... I saw that in the flower shop today as well. I think I'm gonna go down there tomorrow again and write down some of the names of the most interesting shrubs and trees and look them up for bonsai. I still too much of a novice to nail those latin phrases...
BTW. Those cotoneasters looked really...well, droopy - at least the leaves. So I'm thinking about looking for something else. Especially one tree with a very fat base. Can't remember it's name right now. I'll bother you more tomorrow probably, with a new thread. Thanks.
