coreana or turczaninovii ?
Hi Guys. Happy New Year!
Question. I've really had a hard time sorting out the correct name for 'Korean Hornbeam'. In several places it is called 'carpinus turczaninovii' and in others it is called 'carpinus coreana'. Are they the same tree or different trees? Sometimes I see the 'turczaninovii' referred to as rock hornbeam. I would love to know whats what. Thanks for any information. |

Carpinus is the correct name
![]() there's Carpinus betulus - European hornbeam or European ironwood Carpinus caroliniana - American hornbeam or blue beech or water beech Carpinus coreana - Korean Hornbeam Carpinus japonica - Japanese Hornbeam or Japanese carpinus Carpinus laxiflora - Japanese hornbeam or Japanese loose-flowered hornbeam or Loose-flowered hornbeam Carpinus tschonoskii - Yedoensis hornbeam, sometimes also called the Korean Hornbeam or Yeddo hornbeam or Carpinus turkzaninowii: or Turkish hornbeam Another excellent example of why knowing the latin name for your plants is so important. Hope this helps, Will Last edited by Will_Heath : 12-Jan-2005 at 10:24 PM. |

Thanks. So how do you tell one Korean Hornbeam from another? I like the one with the smaller leaves and great fall color. Is it 'Coreana'? I have purchased several 'Korean Hornbeams' over the years and they all seem to look the same, but I'm not sure what their botanical names were. Just curious!
