Contest Talk

Anyone bought anything under 20.00 in anticipation of a spring contest to work on?

I bought a plant for the contest. $20.00 even.

I have yet to work on it yet. I will not post a pic yet till there is something organized. I may change my mind and go with a different plant. I will tell that it is a flowering plant, double trunked, 1 1/2" across at the base, and 21" tall. And oh yea... the bark does flake off some and shows a nice rose and cream color underneath....

OK, folks, I'm going with Crepe Myrtle. Please notify me where to send my address for the prize!

Flowering, double trunked, flakey bark with soft colored wood underneath. My guess is Crape Myrtle. I haven't been able to find much info. on them for bonsai. It'd be nice to watch someone else's as it develops too.
I bought mine for 8 bucks recently, it's in the species specific forum. I didn't really have the contest in mind when I bought it. I don't think I'll be able to keep enough of it for it to look like anything in time for the contest unfortunately. I've got a shohin size boxwood I might try to use, but I'm afraid the contest might come too early in the season for me to get a lot of work done to it either. Still looking!

Does anybody else kinda forget about or overlook the contest forum? Maybe it's just me, but it seems easy to overlook it.

I throw in a vote for Crepe Mrytle too! I'm training two and this tree seems to be the city's choice for our neighborhood. We have lots growing and the bark looks just like you described. I think it very attractive. Flowers come in many different colors.

hmmm, I might have to search around a bit, but ill find something

A fresh area that has fallen off. The color is sort of tan with a hint of rose...

Leesa was right. Give the lady a cigar!

Chinese Quince

I pruned out the top a bit. The buds have already started to move on this one. Should be in full leaf in about 2 weeks.

The apex is pretty good on the shorter trunk, but the taller trunk will need some adjusting. I pruned it back to the best suitable but, but I don't like the crook in the top. I'm hopeing for a better bud to work with. The branches are pretty good already, and I will concentrate on ramifying those this year. It will take lots of pinching on this fast grower.

Regards, Bonsai-al

Good work, Leesa!!!

Since the time is approaching, and the local nurseries will soon be getting in some of their Spring stock, can you outline the rules of the contest? I know that it's supposed to be nursery stock that is bought for $20 or less. Are we just looking for the best tree for the buck?
