Contact in Thailand
I would appreciate anyone putting me in contact with a bonsai resource in Thailand - Bangkok especially. I am looking to buy a couple of trees, and find someone to learn from perhaps.
A couple of questions - when planting trees in a tropical area do you need to go through the cold stratification process - the seeds I refer to are: bald cypress, giant redwood, trident maple, temple juniper, and Japenese White Pine The seed packs have a variety of instructions, mostly with 90 day cold stratification required. I am a total beginner and will appreciate any help, with my questions or in putting me in touch with Bangkok contacts. Thank You. Kyle |

Hate to say it but out of the seeds you mentioned probably only the bald cypress will work in a tropical climate. The trident might germinate and survive. The others will not survive in the tropics for any length of time. Both the bald cypress and the trident seeds will have a better chance of germinating if you put them in the refrigerator for about 30 days before you plant them. As to the other seeds , well , I hope that they have nice pictures on the packages. Hate to say it but those pictures will probably be as close as you will get to a bonsai with them. Hate to sound so negative. |

I visited Thailand many times. Unfortunatelly I wasn't lucky and have not find any more place to buy some bonsai trees but Chatuchak Market. This is Bangkok's largest market and is located not far from Mo Chit Sky train station. If I am not mistaken flower market is open on Tuesday and Thursday, on weekends it's just dress and so on market.
Most of the trees you can see there are in spiral and heart style ![]() If you are interesting in suseiki I highly recommend you to visit Thai Rare Stone Museum - Bangkok 1048-1054 New Road, Bangrak, Bangkok -it is not far from city center http://www.rarestonemuseum.com/english/index_en.htm You can find some information about bonsai in Thailand here: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Pala...4/thailand.html or http://www.geocities.com/bonsai-in-asia/thailand.html Last edited by Jur : 24-Sep-2004 at 08:49 AM. |
