Condensed Contest Rules, (subject To Change)

This is some of the most popular ideas for the contest in condensed form for review. Anyone wishing to make a change, submitt the idea before the end of the week and we will add or subtract as necessary. I would like to see us officially kick off the contest for March 1.

1. Best plant for under 20.00 bucks. Any Source. This seemed to be the best idea from the get-go. Not to much money, but a fairly decent plant.

2. Must provide a before pic of the tree. Tree should also be in original nursery container, and unstyled for bonsai. Previous work would disqualify. I think we all know what that means.

3. Before pic to be submitted by June 1. The submission of the before pic will qualify you for the contest. Be fair, no exceptions please.

4. Finished pic to be submitted by June 15th. This will give some time to the folks with a shorter growing season to work for some time on their plant before sending the pic.

5. First finished picture will be the contestant pic. Once again, no exceptions here. If you are not finished with your tree by the time it is time to get it in under the deadline, then send it in unfinished, otherwise you are out.

6. Tree will be judged in nursery container or bonsai pot if repotted. The tree is being judged not the container. No Virtuals of pot or tree!

7. Popular vote to determine first five places. Popular vote will run from June 16 thru June 30th. Please vote as soon as possible so we can get a fair vote. Vote only once. There will be no exceptions to the ending date this time. Popular vote closes June 30.

8. Walter Pall to pick winners. I have not talked with Walter about this, but I hope he will graciously accept this challange. It will be a good one. Walter will pick the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd from the five finalists. Matt will post the five finalists for Walter to choose from, and the winners should be posted by the 4th of July or sooner. In the event that Walter is unable to do this due to previous engagements or comittments, Matt will choose the final three. I feel he is more than qualified to do this.

As before I will submitt a stand to be the winning prize. It will be a custom stand of about 14x12x3" size. Black walnut, and beautiful. Glenn had mentioned a pot for second, and I hope Matt can come thru for third. (in the event I were to win, yea right, I will give the stand to the second place winner and so on)

If this seems OK lets run with it, otherwise send in your ideas. I would like to see this underway for March 1. I got stands to build and plants to hack...

Best regards, Bonsai-al... sneek peak photo attached

Al, your 'condensed contest rules' seem like a good to go situation. If you were to alter them, I think you might want to include ... a picture of the five finalists as of x date to show the tree is still alive! We don't want the winner displayed dead on the beautiful stand you will provide!

It's a shame the 'one shot style' idea has been sidelined. I thought that that was the best idea to come from the contest ideas thread.

Regards,

TB

Is this open to overseas members as well?

Therefore we need to convert $20 US to our currency. Does that sound right?

David... as far as I can remember, this was going to be open to ALL members from throughout the world. It was going to be up to the individual to convert $20 US to your currency.

Look forward to seeing some trees from down under!

I think this would be a good experience for myself as a beginning bonsai-er. I can't wait to see others' trees!

Treebeard, I guess I'm not following you. You post a before pic, and you have 15 days to make your tree. That sounds like a one shot deal to me. Not much time for any styling on the tree later, besides once the finished pic is posted thats the contender you have submitted, case closed. Clarify, if I'm still not getting it.

Thanks, Bonsai-al

Al, so you mean we're not to do any actual work on the tree until June 1st?
