Common Grapevine
Today i was doing some yard work and dug up a 3 inch high bit of grapevine growing out of an old tree stump. It's knarled and fairly thick and makes a very nice accent. I don't plan on doing any more work on it right now, but for future refence, does grapevine bud back easily?
Thanks, Tom |

Try this web site, I believe it is Don Ziemann's. who raises a lot of Grape Bonsai and is, what I call an expert in that field.
Hopefully he will have an Email address. I lost his address when my computer crashed.... http://www.bonsainl.nl/BPG/BS_BPBTE.HTM

Cut it back hard in the winter and you'll have lots of new growth. I've seen 6-inch diameter grape stumps come back to life. This grape was dug up in November, cut into about 8-inch tall stumps (just the trunk, no roots), and by June it was full of life.
Good luck.

Several years ago, Don Ziermann sent me three hunks of grapevine wood. They had not a stitch of roots. I placed them in cascade pots with coarse sand and watered them every day. In about a month I had a plethora of roots and they lasted for several years... I just was never able to grow any grapes.... I
transplanted them into bonsai soil and they lasted for several more years, but I assume that our New Jersey weather was just not the same as the California weather from whence they came. I lost them all abouth the third or fourth year.

Regular bonsai soil will be fine. I haven't got mine to bear fruit yet either. I was advised to give it full sun and cut back to previous year's growth to get it to fruit.
Good luck.
