Have anyone experience with collecting from the wild Juniperus Phoenicea - Phoenician juniper?? I have dig few of them, tray to save as many fine roots as I can, but they didn't survive....
Here are 2 photos of my last failure - I have find it in the spring, prune, and leave in nature and leave... (2. photo - after pruning in nature) - After 2 years we collect him in January (1. photo - digging) Untill July he gradually dieback, branch, by branch! Do you have any useful advices for me? A friend from the local club also have bad experience with them. I don't want to collect them any more, if I can't prevent them from dying. |

Ms. Marija,
That was certainly a beautiful juniper...What a shame to lose it...I have no experience with this variety...The photos appear to be of a rocky area, but the photos do not indicate the weather conditions of the area...Arid, damp, elevation, etc... I would ask what techniques did you use after collection to care for the tree?...How did you protect the rootball when transporting from the collection site?...What soil composition did you use?...How much of the original soil did you remove?...What was the size of the container in comparison to the root ball?...Did you mist the tree after collection?...Was the tree kept in shade, partial shade, or full sun?...Did you fertilize, and if so, what are the details of your fertilization?... I think this is the second time I have seen you post this, and the answers to these questions would help us to at least give suggestions on what may be worth trying on the next one you collect... Regards Behr ![]()

Dear Grampz! All my bonsais are yamadori, collected from nature. I have 8 years long experience... digging from very hard conditions! So I won't answer on questions above. ![]() BTW, Here in Croatia, we don't have bonsai nursuries, specialised shops, bonsai museums, experienced bonsai masters... etc. Only thing that we can do is learn from books, and go to nature and collect. It is a very hard way of learning. I appreciate Tonis advices, because we live in simmilar climate zone, and have same domestic plants... here I was only asking for Phoenician juniper particularities... since he work with them with grate success for about 20 years! |
