hI cARL.....er, that is, Hi Carl!
OK, I'm no Walter Pall, but I have collected some of our Wild Plums here (P. angustifolia) and can tell you about my experience. I collected them last Spring and have done little but pot them in what passes for Bonsai Soil Mix with me and pretty much left them alone to adapt to potted life. I cut back the tops, mid Summer when they threatened to get totally out of hand, but that was about it. They are doing very well. They seem to be very easy to collect and adapt to life in pots very quickly and easily. I will repot them in grow boxes next Spring and see what the root systems look like. There was one oddity when I collected them: it seemed that the fairly large thicket that I collected from was all one, single tree on a single root system. Most of them had practically no roots when I collected the, but came up as T shapes off a single large lateral root. From the looks of them, I think roots have developed very well since planting in pots. I'll find out in the Spring. If it were me, I'd let my Plum(s) adapt to life in a pot before defoliating. Maybe I'm too cautious, but I let every thing I collect grow for a minimum of a year before doing much with it. Regards, Fred |

Carl, your tree sounds quite nice. Would you like to show a picture? You can get some amazing feedback here. Sometimes good; sometimes, well..... I don't promise you that the feedback will be of any value, only that it will be amazing!
