Collected Trees Poll
EDIT: DON'T VOTE, I WILL DO A NEW POLL WITH MULTIPLE OPTIONS SORRY!
How many trees have you collected? And where were they? To understand our impact on the environment we need to know the trends that apply to individual collectors. Please vote for as many as apply to yourself. Definitions: "wild" trees would be from areas where there is no habitation, such as mountain sides, deserts, or forests. In other words, places where people weren't planting trees at any point. Everything is natural. "abandoned" would be old orchards, commercial property that is currently unused, old farms, side of the road, etc. Places where people once planted or tended trees but aren't there now. "urban" would be people's yards, commercial property that is being tended, etc. Places where people have a significant impact on what grows there. Last edited by Joanie : 24-May-2005 at 01:28 PM. Reason: didn't choose multiple option |

I didn't click the multiple option and don't seem to be able to edit the poll, so I will start a new poll in an hour or so. Please disregard this poll, let's start again....

About five years ago, a few of us made the drive to Colorado. In the mountains close to Pike's Peak, I collected three trees, a Colorado blue spruce, a fir, and a small ponderosa pine. All three are still alive and doing well, although I must say they have just been in the ground being ignored. I knew when I brought them home that I wasn't prepared to care for them properly, but that in the near future I would have the knowledge to keep them healthy. This spring, both the fir and the spruce have been potted up, the spruce in a training pot, and the fir in a growing box. Why these choices? They are what I had that fit these trees. In fact, the pot was a little small for the spruce due to a long root that we had to cut to get it out of the ground. But it will be potted better in a couple of years.
I have also collected landscape trees in the neighborhood (I was on a binge) that I have to admit I was not able to keep alive. Unfortunately I lost two large garden junipers that would have grafted wonderfully, an amur maple with a hollow trunk from a hedge, and a hawthorn damaged in an ice storm with a ten inch trunk. This is why I always try to impress on others that we should leave trees where they are if we are not able to care for them properly. With my wild trees, I am confident now that I can do just that. I wish I still had the others though. |

HeyMikey, I'm going to guess that Chris is going to say something like patience...he did say collected five years ago and placed in the ground and ignored...so to speak...am I correct Chris?

Thanks for the kind words!
That's absolutely right. They are so vigorous now that I have a nice buffer zone in case I am a complete idiot. They are in excellent, if overgrown condition. Cutting them back this fall will help promote back budding, and of course I have to do some grafting on the spruce in spring. P.S. Here is a photo I just found of digging that tree.
