Collected Maple

Earlier this week i collected some kind of maple (not sure which species). The trunk is about 2.5 inches, and the roots are already perfect because it was growing on top of a shallow clay depisit. The trunk is way too tall to style the exsisting branches as a bonsai. can i do a trunk chop without leaving any branches and wait for new shoots, or will this kill the tree?
Thanks,
Tom

Tom.. a couple questions. When you collected this tree was it in leaf with new spring growth? or dormant? How much of original trees trunk and branches is still there? If it hasn't started leafing yet then maybe a full trunk chop can be done. There are other conditions which will help in its survival.. was the tree in good health when collected.. did you see it in leaf the season before?
How much rootage was there when you washed all the clay off.. main roots and secondary roots?? A pic will help also if ya have one.

The tree is not in leaf, fully healthy, the root system made my jaw drop. There were hardly any of the thick anchor roots usually found in collected trees. Great nebari, but they turned into the thin feeder roots right under the soil surface. and there were a ton of them! I dont think i was clear enough when i said it was growing on a clay deposit. There were about 3 inches of topsoil on top of the clay, this is what it was growing in. The trunk goes up about 2 feet before it branches off.
Hope this helps with a mental image

Thanks again

Tom
