Coffee Table Inspiration

One of the things that i've noticed as a repercussion of my fairly new bonsai addiction is an enhanced awareness and appreciation for nature. For example, in the past i would never notice or even care to notice the beautiful trees and bushes along the streets while driving. Now i have to force myself to keep my eyes on the road. If i get nothing more from bonsai i'm already very greatful for my renewed relationship with nature.

However, all of the tree-gazing that i've been doing lately has served to reinforce what i've heard in the past about bonsai conveying an impression of nature rather than a replication. Essentially i've noticed that, while beautiful, most of the trees i see would not make very good bonsai... mostly due to a lack of artistic aesthetics. (see also many great Andy Rutledge posts....

That having been said, great bonsai is still built on a foundation of natural inspiration like a single mighty oak in the middle of a field, or a gnarled juniper clinging to life from the side of a cliff, or the fascinating forest or swamp near your home. With those special sources of inspiration being so few and far between I think it would be a great idea for someone to compile and publish a kind of coffee table book featuring pictures of amazing natural trees specifically tailored to bonsai inspiration. With all of the different bonsai styles, depicting all of the different features, of all of the different kinds of trees from all of the different environments around the world, one could create quite an amazing book.

So how about it? I sure as hell couldn't do it but maybe someone out there knows someone that could. Here's an example of something that might be featured. (also seen in Treebay's windswept faq thread). Maybe it's just me, but i would really love to see some of the natural masterpieces out there.

I think it sound like a great idea. You should go for it. I am sure you could get the assistance you needed along the way.

...and keep your eyes on the road!

Regards,
Mark

Dr. Burninator,

On a somewhat related note, have you seen this older thread?

Haha! we sent the same link.

Walter Pall also has some very inspirational posts from trees seen on his collecting trips. I am sure you'll find them if you search on his name.

Regards,

Matt

Wow that's a great thread. I'm going to have to go through the 3000 or so digital pics that i brought home from my 5 month stay in New Zealand, and see if i can revive it again with some more pics. Seriously, with the overwhelmingly positive response from just that thread you can imagine how well a professionally done book would do.
