Cockspur Hawthorn - Anyone have any experience with this?
Hello.
I was curious if anyone has had any experience with collecting, taking an air layering, and growing Cockspur Hawthorn as bonsai. I have a large one sitting on my lot where my future house will be in a couple of years. It seems a shame to let this large tree dissapear without any progeny to carry on. Looking at the tree and some sites, it has small fruits, flowers, and leaves. I plan on doing some air-layering next spring. http://www.bonsai-bci.com/species/hawthorn.html http://plants.usda.gov/plantguide/pdf/pg_c...20hawthorn' Thanks, Dirk |

re Hawthorne
Not familar with that cultivar, but I have several Washington Hawthornes. The grow well from cuttings, sorry can't tell you when it is best to take them.
I have air layered one and it is doing nicely. It developed an unbelieveable number of roots in just about four months. Did not use hormones. It is doing nicely now and should be ready for a pot next year. Good luck. jg |
