Christmas Gifts

As a few of you might have heard in chat, while the forum was down... I have a couple nieces who have been bugging me for their own bonsai for quite awhile

Considering that they are 9 and 12, I decided that I needed to come up with something that would pass for a bonsai but be forgiving of neglect and be inexpensive just in case they succeed in killing it. I decided on Jades. I picked this pot up for 12.95 at a nursery. It had these two jade plants in it with moss on the top.

These are the gifts that I made for them. I left all leaf trimming on the trunks and pruning for them to do when they first get them. If all else fails, they will have a couple pots.

Well, hey, I didn't charge you for it!

My grandma, 96 YO god bless her, and blind as a bat, has asked that I giver her a bonsai tree. I think like you I am not going to invest a lot in this one, since she has not had a living plant in .... a long time. She used to spray-paint her dead shrubs to keep them green -- I kid you not.

I think your gift here is a good idea. Safe, but enough to hook someone who really gets interested. Good idea about leaving the trimming. I bet they come with free advice, too!

Well the early Christmas gifts have been given and since taken to their new home.

My nieces were very happy with them and quite excited. Thanks for the kind words, may the looks that were on their faces appear also on yours this season.

Happy Holidays,

Will

Good on you Uncle Will. I like the second pot you chose, just seems to go well with the plant. When you tell your nieces about how to propagate jades they will have great fun I'm sure.

Regards,

Chris.

Great stuff! I have given jade and mini-jade as gifts for the same reasons you state and in my case becase it is so easy to propgate cuttings The mini-jade cuttings grow like crazy when the roots get established.
