Re: Chinese Elm Picture.
Shaunn,
Thanks for posting a photo. I know you are proud of this bonsai. The pot is out of the ordinary and a good choice. The distance from the pot to the first branch is quite large. You might eventually consider an air layer. Also there seems to be quite a few branches growing from one small stretch of trunk. You need to make some decisions about that or a nasty reverse taper is in it's future. An Air layer at a point just below the first branch would give you a nice clump and an extra trunk to make a broom with. Just a thought.

Re: Chinese Elm Picture.
Thankyou very much for your advice, Im new at this so its appreciated. Ill go with your thoughts, and once done I'll send you a picture. I have re-potted this though, used the pot on a Maple. How do I know when a Bonsai needs root pruining without removing it from its pot? and how oftern doe's it need to be done? Thanks, shaun22 |

Re: Chinese Elm Picture.
I repot when I can lift the tree from the pot with the rootball and soil intact for inspection. This sounds crazy but it gives me the margin of error that I need to develop the root base that I am trying to create. Lots of roots to pick and choose.
Best regards, Bonsaial
