Charlie

Good luck to all in the way of Hurricane Charlie

The ruminants of Bonnie flew through here yesterday and left behind record levels of rain. We got almost 3 inches of rain breaking a record set in 1978. Naturally Charleston SC had some flooding.
Now it looks like Charlie will be paying us a visit. Or what is left of it anyway. We should get a bunch of rain and winds gusting as high as 60 mph. Things aught to start getting a bit nasty tonight and last through tomorrow.
I'll spend the day trying to secure the nursery. Most, if not all, of my bonsai will have to weather the storm outside. Since the storm will approaching from the south I will put the trees on the north side of the house. That should afford them at least some protection. Thank God I have a rather large house. It should act as a pretty good wind breaker.
We are scheduled to be on the west side of the storm. That is where most of the wind will be so my trees will need all the help they can get.
The ground is saturated from yesterdays rain so I do expect to see some flooding. Not much in Summerville SC but places like Charleston SC and Ridgeville SC might have larger problems.
By the time Charlie gets to me it should be downgraded to a tropical storm. Not the best of conditions but a heck of a lot better than it could be. I think I will come out of it ok. No major problems just what one would call a bit of a bother. These storms loose power pretty quickly once they get over land and Charlie has a long way to go in order to get here.
I should have most , if not all, things secured by noon today. Charlie could change its track but there is no sense in taking any chances.
For those of you that live in the Tampa Florida area I wish you the best. For you this storm will definitely be more than just a bit of a bother. Hunker down, be safe and if you can get out of the way of this storm. The latter being a much better choice than anything else.

Ron,
Glad to hear you mad it through Bonnie in one piece. I hope you have the same good fortune with Charlie.

The weather channel shows that the edge of the hurricane should be hitting us, but I do not see any sign of it outside...cloudy skys, light wind, and no rain. Hopefully, it will stay that way.

I woke up this morning to find one top heavy tree had been knocked off of its bench. No damage done to the tree. So, we may be getting a few large gusts. I brought all of the topheavy and shohin trees into the garage and the rest should be fine. They have made it though tougher things than the edge of a hurricane.

It looks like I spoke too soon in an earlier thread. Apparently, it is as strong as Andrew right now. I wish those in the Ft. Meyers area the best of luck on taking the worst of this hurricane.
