Changing the apex
Hi,
I want to change the apex of my bonsai to something good looking because I don't like it now. I have wired part of a branch to make an apex from it. Another idea is to make "jin" to the appex. I don't now what to do. Any good ideas? Thanks in avance, John Lewis. |

It is absolutely impossible to say anything about that top without seeing the rest of the tree. Esthetically you can't isolate one component like that and make any judgements since the top relates to the branching, nebari, pot, everything! Another factor is that it is impossible to see exactly where on the trunk you made the chop. Perhaps it should have been lower, perhaps it shouldn't have been chopped at all.

Mindcrime is right John, tell us what your tree is also. Aside from that you did well process wise , but we need the rest of the tree to tell you more.

You are right! Here are the images. The apex is viewed from the left side of the tree.
Thanks, John Lewis. Last edited by JohnLewis : 18-Apr-2007 at 04:25 PM. |

My personal opinion (wich might seem harsh, but in the best interest of yourself and the tree) is to plant it either in the ground for a couple of years or at least a bigger pot. Right now there's really not much to work with.
Now, for the fun part: Read and read and read about bonsai (especially the articles written here and elsewhere about selecting stock and how to find decent nursery material). Then get another tree (or several) that you can grow depending on your situation (as in indoors/outdoors) and suitable for your climate. A really good way to learn is to join a local bonsai club and have an experienced member help you find a good tree.

The problem with the apex is that you are creating a conifer image from a deciduous tree. Decidous trees rarely have pointy apex. They have round ones. Rounded apex are created with a network of smaller branches at the apex, not a single leader.
Try to induce more twigs in the apex with hard pruning. Don't jin it--that is also mostly a conifer thing... |

Rockm is right, you don't want an apex, you want a crown. Even with conifers, older trees generally have a broader spreading crown instead of a point...young trees are pointy.
