Chamaecyparis / False Cypress overwintering

I just got a small Chamaecyparis / False Cypress given to me and was wondering how I should proceed with overwintering it.

It is a young plant approximately 10" high and appears to be in good condition. I immediately repotted as it was in a small starter pot and was just beginning to be rootbound.

I need advice on how to proceed from here. Normally I would plant it in a bed I have set up in my backyard to let it start to grow and thicken up. I know from reading up on them that they normally need to be overwintered (I am in zone 5b) but am worried about how to do this in midwinter ..

My other plants were mulched into my backyard several months ago. I do have an unheated garage (no windows) or a corner of my basement I could use.

Any advice you could offer?

Thanks

Duane

What kind of Chamy are we talking about? Most of this species I am familiar with do quite well if mulched and protected from the wind. My only concern is the fact that you repotted it. If you virtually left the roots alone there will probably be no problem. If you pruned roots the tree is at risk.

The label didn't indicate any particulars other than "False Cypress".

I didn't trim the roots at all, other than the smallest of combing to ensure the roots no longer grew in a circular pattern. I put it into a much larger pot and added some Scott's potting soil and watered it.

So from what you have said: If I can get a spot dug into the ground, I can place it, pot and all into the ground; and then mulch it as I did the other ones?

That should work fine but don't forget to shelter from the wind. Some kind of barrier would be prefferable. Could you post a picture or describe the foliege? Hinoki Cypress and its many cultivars are all False Cypress. Then there are trees like Boulevard Cypress, Sawara Cypress and all like cultivars. This last group have needle like foliege and winter burn quite badly so they need protection from the wind. I have found that throwing straw on top of them works quite well or even a burlap wind break.

I think the care suggestions will be OK. It is possible it could be Chamecypress Filicodies, Fern Leafed Hinoki Cypress but I am not certin. It looks a lot like Atlantic White Cedar which is also a Chamecypress (not to be confused with Thuja Ocidentalis, White Cedar or Arborvitea).

Just a followup.

Found an identical plant at a nursery so I now know it's
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana (possibly elwoodii)

Thanks again

You may have to think carefully about the styling options for this tree. I agree it could very well be Lawsonii. The problem with this bunch of Chamys is the tendency for the branches to grow upward. Most conifer styles look to have horizontal branching with foliege masses at the ends. This type of configuration may be hard to achieve with this tree. Be creative and think about the tree, look for styling options that may be outside of the mainstream.

This isn't the best species for bonsai. Unless it has some other redeeming characteristic you are probably better off choosing another tree. The growth pattern will fight you all the way. C. obtusa 'Nana' (Dwarf Hinoki) is tough, too, but has some redeeming characteristics. This one is just going to be a battle.

Regards,

Matt
