Ch. pisifera 'boulevard' - winter wiring?
I'm about to start in on my winter wiring of the pines and junipers.
I have a boulevard cypress that I did for a demo in May. It not only survived my hamfisting, but has thrived. But branches need to come down more. Does anyone else in zone 5-ish have experience winter wiring these? Useful? Useless? Harmful (like it would be for most maples, I gather)?

I get a distinct color change to almost rust where I live. It certainly looks dead until about February. That's about all I can say.
Regards, Matt

WmAnnis,,
I live in zone 6 I guess some say 6b but what do I know?? My plants know I think But I wire my cypress just about anytime of the year. I wire and leave on for as long as I can but it seems that the branches just don't want to cooperate. After taking the wire off (before it bites in ) the branches just go back to where they want to go anyway. Its a constant battle!! SO I kinda let them tell me what they want to do and I style it from there. Its less of a hassle. The false cypress is a tuff critter but after you work with them awhile you grow to love them( just keep your garden knomes close by to help with the pinching )John

Well, some spruce are that way, so I'm used to the idea of repeated wiring these days. Quote:
They sure do seem vigorous. Normally I expect - actually I want - a bit of sulking after the first root prune out of a nursery pot. This one did no such thing. There's new growth everywhere (mostly not backbudding, though). I've also gotten my best cuttings success rate (apart from ficus, the sawdust of which will root I think) out of this tree. Thanks for the extra info, John.
