Central Coast Oddities

While at the coast on our anniversary, we came across this strip of cypress trees that had died and left this row of magnificent dead wood. I have not a clue what killed them , but the skeletons are wonderful. Can't you just see the "tunuki" possibilities.

At Montano De Oro State Park, I came across this great cypress tree. The Hanging branch is perfect. This is the exact way a hanging branch should look like on a bonsai. If this can be modeled on your next bunjin tree, then you will have hit the nail smack on the head.

Best regards, Bonsaial

Re: Central Coast Oddities

Nice finds...good eye Al.
That's one of the beauties of this stuff, it's all around us.
That hanger is great, I see some neat Cypress trees on that wind blown stretch of Hwy 101 from North of Santa Barbara to Gaviota where the road turns inland, state parks there too. It hoots through there & the trees show it.

You guys have ruined me though...I can't just drive or walk around anymore, my eyes are honed in on the nearest branch structure as they scan from plant to plant. City or country, nary a hedge or potted specimen goes unnoticed.
I guess it beats stressin' on the traffic as long as you watch the road.

Bonsaial, I think you should start a campaign to raise a few thousand dollars, buy a fifty foot or 100 foot cypress, and pursue your dream...a tanuki on the coast highway. Maybe set a mame bonsai beside it, for contrast!
