Cedar raft

The photos show a cedar (brevifolia, I think) raft I've had planted in the ground for eighteen months. I plan to remove it in the spring (March). I have a couple of questions:

1) It is twenty inches long with nine branch/trees. Are they too close together?
2) If the trees need to be removed would it be better to do it before or after the tree is removed it from the ground? Obviously it would be easier to view and style once it was removed.

The last photo is the tree as I receieved it (as a gift from Brianbay 9!).

PS Sorry about the quality of the photos. It is a challenge to isolate one tree growing in a garden.

hi there,

Based on what I can see in the 2nd pic you are going to have a very nice raft if everything goes as planned.

I wouldn't even worry about removing trunks right now... maybe let it get established in its first pot and get comfortable before you start thinking about major styling moves.

Good luck!

I wouldn't remove trunks either. It is more important to get heavy wire on the trunks so you can start getting the raft/grove shape started. You can do it when you repot, just be sure to keep the root ball moist through the operation. Then it will be more obvious if a few of the trunks have to go, but try turning them into dead trunks first to see if the effect works. If not, then take the axe to them.

Should be nice. Juniper rafts and groves can be striking.
