Cascade Larix
This is a Larix laricina in a pond plant basket. The Basket is an 8 inch round and has contained this Larch for two years now. As the buds are starting to swell on this one, I am getting ready to raffia and wire movement and branch positioning. This will happen (time permitting) within the next few days. I will update as I go.
The base is about 3 inches. Or just under perhaps. I am torn between semi and full.....what are your opinions? Paul

one more sky background shot.
there is a wire that is holding it down slightly (hooked to trunk and basket). If removed, it would raise the line of the trunk to almost parallel with the rim of the pot. Comments and suggestions welcomed.....criticism feared, but also welcomed. Paul

Paul,
I am seeing this as a semi. You have some branches to form your apex, and a good number of choices for the cascading trunk. I am looking forward to seeing the progress on this one. Adam |

Paul, I am having a problem with the curve in the middle of the trunk that would make it into a semi or full cascade. It just doesn't feel right. It might be because of the planting angle it is currently at. If you are to go either a semi or full cascade this tree needs to be tilted further over. The curve makes the tree seem too tall to ever be a convincing cascade. A large tilt to the left would hide this tall curve and make the cascade look more convincing. Just my opinion though.

Adam,
Yes there are some branches that are workable, I need to thicken alot of the main ones up. I hope to beef it up with some good feeding regiments this year. David, Excellent points. I too have a problem with the curve. I think you are right on with the tilt. Makes tons of sense. I bought this one at a nursery for just a few dollars. It was a bargain and definitely (IMO) had some potential. It already had the bend in it and continued horizontally. I increased the bend in hopes that it would somehow magically make it better. Right at the bend you can see that branch that juts upward. I thought with some growth and terminal pinching on the other branches, I could beef that area up and make the bend less curvey, at least in appearance. Time will tell. And we all know what time can do. Thanks for the comments Paul

It just dawned on me......I should raffia and heavy wire the trunk in the opposite direction maybe........with a tilt to the right.........

My euro's worth is that I'd remove all branches hanging down underneath the trunk, then I'd sweep all remaining branches forwards in keeping with the rythm of the trunk.
YEP, I agree with Adam, semicascade's the way to go. Really surprised to see that there is no foliage at all? Nigel

Nigel,
Thanks for the comments. Most of my larches are just now showing bud swell. Some have a bit more burst to them and are showing green. This may be due to our late springs, we just pulled out the trees about three weeks ago and are still experiencing some below freezing nights..... It is very typical to not show any foliage now. But I am eagerly awaiting the actual spring weather. Fun eh? Paul
