Going by your description, you could be heading for trouble. If it were mine, i would turn the pot upside down holding onto the trunk and see what is what. If any mushy roots trim them of, if everything looks okay you can put it back into the same pot, or, you can do a slip pot. This is simply a bigger pot, with better compost, and with ought disturbing the root ball. To help it on its way you can tease out a few roots, but again, leave the root ball basically undisturbed.
