Question Can I collect at this time?

I have a Pinus Densiflora "Pendula" I've been growing in my yard for about 4 years now. I'd like to pot it up and was wondering if this is the right time to do so. It is 39ins. tall and nearly 2ins. at the base. It has alot of movement in the trunk an would make a nice looking bunjin. I live in Central Ca. near the coast (about 7 miles inland) .

The safest time to lift it would be in the early spring, just as new growth is starting to push.

But you can do some prep work to make collecting it next spring even better.

The simplest thing is to cut down into the ground with a shovel, about the size that you are planning to dig up next year. Maybe just 1/2 the way around to be really safe. This will sever the top roots, and hopefully force some new roots close the the trunk. You could also dig a shallow trench about about the same size (again, maybe just 1/2 of the way), and back fill with some good, coarse soil.

You can also begin to work the tree in place - pinching buds, cutting unwanted branches, etc. It will respond great in the ground and give you a head start.

FYI - I have begun to do this with all my pines in the field, working the tree for a year before I dig it. I believe it will give me a 2 year jump on things (back budding and overall tree strength) once I dig them next year.

Thumbs up

I'd like to thank everyone for the feedback. One thing Bonsai has taught me is patience, so I'll start doing some work on the tree in the morning or maybe not. Anyway thanks again.

Hi Peter,
I see you've already gotten good info on re-potting your tree, so I won't belabor the point.
Knowing some of your local conditions, I'd suggest you do it late in November, early December.....before the river rises, if you know what I mean.
We can discuss this at next months meeting, if you wish.
