OK, it's big. But it's in a pot. A ...BIG... pot.
But I'm not gonna root prune for a few years. And then only if it gets too big.
However, I prune the foliage.
But I'm gonna let it get real big.

So Is it or ain't it?

Either way, I like it. It's a Pyracantha.

"Perspectify" that image for us. (That is, what are its measurements, have a pic of it with something we'd be able to judge size from?)

Unless you were standing on a chair when you took this picture, or you are nine feet tall, the question of big in this case is not an issue. From here it depends on a lot of things, most of which could be viewed as subjective. Some better pictures would help.

As far as I'm concerned you can call it bonsai, Bolivia, or Uncle Bob

As long as you're having fun with it.....

Is it just a flower? I can't tell, but if it's not woody, I don't think I'd call it bonsai...maybe a big accent plant though?

if you want to take the translation of bonsai as tree in a pot, then yes that is exactly what you have there.

Will it win any bonsai exhibitions...probably not. Just have fun and call it what you want...Ive seen worse trees SOLD as bonsai.

Better pix: And a trowel for scale.

I like "Uncle Bob" but gonna call it "Uncle George" in honor of the craziest uncle anyone ever had. Even gave my dad a hotfoot.
Now....WHO.... in the past 50 years has even HEARD of a "hotfoot?"

G'day Kazoo...

Here is some info on size classification of bonsai...

BONSAI SIZE CLASSIFICATION

Most bonsai range in height from 10” to 30”. However, traditional size classifications run from less than 2” (shito) to 60” (hachi-uye). Recently, there has emerged a new classification, imperial bonsai, measuring from 60” to a maximum of about 120”. Further more, the Japanese classify thus: finger tip, palm, komono one handed, (fits in one hand), katade-moche one handed (readily carried in one hand), two handed, 4-8 handed, and eight handed.

Imperial bonsai
This is the largest common size today, ranging from 60” to 120”. The name comes from the stately old bonsai found around the interior of the Japanese Imperial Palace. They are classified as eight handed in that they require four or more men to move them about.

Large bonsai
Large bonsai was, until the late 20th century, at 40” to 60”, the largest classification. Known as “hache-uye”, they are considered four to eight handed based on weight.

Two handed bonsai
Two handed is the most common size displayed at bonsai shows. They are called “chiu” or “chumono” bonsai. Their height range is from 16” to 36”

Medium size bonsai
Known as, "katade-mochi", medium size bonsai can be carried easily in one hand. Their height range is 10-18". They seem to be the most popular size among bonsaiists.

Small bonsai
Small bonsai, also know as, "komono", are trees that can be picked up and carried one handed. Ranging 6-10" tall, it is the largest of the miniature bonsai.

Mame bonsai
Mame, or palm sized bonsai, are traditionally from 2” to 6” high. However, a bunjin style bonsai can be 10” tall and still be held comfortably in the palm…walla! A 10” mame!

Shohin bonsai
Between mame and shito.

Fingertip bonsai
Fingertip or “shito”, also known as “poppy seed”, are the smallest of all bonsai. Maximum size is 2” high, and these plants, pot and all, will fit on a fingertip. If you want a real challenge, try keeping a few of these little guys alive!

The above classifications are not my definitions...rather, they come from significant research involving a number of different sources.

Call your bonsai "Uncle George" or "Uncle Fritz" or what ever pleases you... whatever, it should fit into one of the above classes.

Pat
