Can anyone identify this tree??

I picked this tree up from a nursery this week for a song. It had been sitting out the back and given little attention. Once I saw the trunk I had no choice but to buy it...

Only problem is I'm not sure exactly what it is I know it is a Prunus but that is all..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

AEA

Gday AEA!

If it's a Prunus, my best guess is P. lusitanica, or Portugal Laurel. It's an evergreen species, which - in my limited experience - tolerates heavy root pruning (in early Spring, preferably) and will backbud readily. The one I owned displayed a very nice root flare.

Thanks and good luck.

FlyBri.

I bought one at a home improvement center/nursery as a bay-tree. I was then told by a friend who I trust only slightly more than the salesperson that it was a Portugal Cherry. So I am interested as well.

At the moment the only thing I do know for certain is that this fall it underwent a relentless restyling by a flock of turkeys who seem to love the "cherries". I would not have taken quite so dramatic approach myself, but as a courtesy, I will wait until spring to make a final assessment of their skill level.

I have a white birch that was similarly styled by a moose and must admit that over several years, he did a fine job. It is now part of my collection.

Cheers!

Thanks all. My guess was a Portugese Laurel. I'll wait to see if it is deciduous this winter, if it doesn't loose it's leaves then that is the final classification.

I'll post some photos when I cut it down next spring. I really appreciate your help.

Regards,

AEA
