Callicarpa/Beautyberry
Recently I have seen some Callicarpa (Beautyberry) species in the nursery trade. There are some references on the Web to their use as bonsai, but not much about how to work with them or what styles might be most appropriate. The stems seem sometimes to be hollow, as in Forsythia. Does anybody have any experience with these critters, any advice to share? Thanks.

I am pretty sure that this photo is mislabeled, but this is a common style for young berry plants like murasaki, porcelainberry, nandina and beauty berry:

Thank you for the informative reply. A nice, lively-looking bonsai with a kind of down-home elegance. The plant in the picture is probably not the same species I have been seeing, which has denser clusters of smaller berries that droop rather than striking outward. But the basic structure looks the same: panicles (is that the right word?) emerging from the leaf axils, so maybe it's of the same genus.

I also bought a Callicarpa. Can anyone tell me something more about this species and do you have some pictures from Callicarpa bonsai ?

Here is a pic taken at Ginza Morimae in Tokyo last year. I have a small one that I bought at a local garden center that is still in a nursery container growing out...certainly not worth a pic yet! ;-)

G'day Matt, Is there a way of getting a copy of the pic of this Callicarpa into my computer, I have tried and it is copyright protected? Much obliged, Nigel

No, I don't think it is Matt's photo. He was just showing an example. If it were Matt's photo he would have posted it directly, instead of just a link.

This URL should take you to a very interesting site, wherein you'll find some excellent pics of Callicarpas. Try clicking for the translated version at the top of the page. And I think that it is the fourth or fifth Icon along, which you need to open. If you succeeded thus far, then you'll be able to click on each picture, to get larger views. Success and regards, Nigel
