Thanks Gary, I was surprised to hear the digging has been canceled due to blasting. I guess the turbines are going in and progress marches on.

My tribute to Harry Hirao and all his generousity through the years. Thank you Harry, Mr. California Juniper!

Cheers, Al Keppler

Great thread on the California juniper Al! Harry Hirao is the greatest! Thanks for doing this write up Al!

Harry, those are some high quality koi. Expensive! Is that a super looking inazuma kohaku next to the tancho there? I used to be into koi too. I can tell, you got a good set up there. Thanks for stealing this thread!

Who was first Harry or John? 18 Volt NiCd battery packed power tools on the job I see. No more romance and brawn at dig time, just the humm of power tools. This seems sacrilegous. Somebody buy Harry a set of golf clubs before the juniper goes extinct.

I didn't mean to hijack this thread, I was just answering King Kong's questions. I've been into koi a lot longer than Bonsai, but still learning about both. Thanks for the complements In another thread someone ask about using Japanese terms in referring to Bonsai. many more Japanese terms used when referring to Koi.

Harry

This is what Robert Baran at Phoenix Bonsai Society has to say about this:

"One of his eldest son's science teachers, who was also interested in trees, told John in 1952 about some small junipers seen growing in the desert. Off they went, and John saw for the first time these magnificent trees only a few feet tall but gnarled and twisted unlike anything he saw in the local nurseries. That was the beginning of the weekly trek to the "Valley of the Junipers" for the next twenty-five years.

.....On April 4, the same day his first grandson was born, John collected a California juniper (Juniperus californica) in the high desert country. In honor of 1962 (the "Year of the Tiger"), the 33" tall tree would later be named Tora (Tiger). (The tree is believed to be the longest trained of any California Juniper.) In November, another California juniper was collected. At 32" in height, this would be named Ryu (Dragon) because there is a mythical rivalry between a "Tora" and a "Ryu" to see who can strive to obtain something that only one can possess. "

So, these are some of the earliest collected California Junipers in our country. It's interesting to note that it took many years before bonsai practitioners in California started to realize the bonsai potential of these junipers. At the beginning, there were many other species used for bonsai here in California, before these junipers blew away the bonsai scene.

Thanks...so John Yoshio Naka's "Tora" and "Ryu" were the first collected in November 1962 and were the first Jiniperus califrnica plants collected.

There is no difinitive answer here. The southern California area was a hotbed of bonsai in the late fifties and early sixties. There are many notable C. junipers that were collected during this time period. Like anything, there will likely always be notables. Certainly John Naka and Harry Hirao are noteworthy but certainly not first to practise bonsai in the So Cal area. Certainly Umenori Hatanaka springs to mind as a pioneer in bonsai and hardly ever referenced in the So Cal who's who.
