1. Get a Nikon Coolpix, they range from $200 &up. Get the best one you can afford.
2. the resolution is relative to the price.
image capacity is dependant on the card you use. you can hold over 60 high quality images on a 64 meg card at around $30
4. you can get rechargable batteries or an ac adapter.
5. focal range varries with price. exposure is much more contollable than many.
6. Nikor lenses are know as one of the best.
7. I have ready access to 3 Nikon Coolpix: one if the 2 mp range one in the 3mp and one in the 4mp range. All take fantastic pics, but of course the 4mp is the best.

I am guessing that this camera would be used primarily to photograph bonsai? Is there a price range in mind for this (hypothetical) purchase?

Regards,

Matt

Scrath out a lot of different cameras if it is under 100 dollars. Look on ebay and see if you can get a deal.

Unless the primary use is for internet applications only (72 pixels per inch) you probably should hold off on a purchase at that price point. You won't get even passable 4x6 prints on a $100 budget at this time. We had to spend in the neighborhood of $300 last year for that level of quality with a short range zoom and a removable memory card.

There is also the consideration that the camera is only part of the equation. Often the total budget needs to include a CD writer, more memory and batteries for the camera, photo software, etc.

It's pretty much true that you get what you pay for up to about $1500, where diminishing returns begin to kick in. Maybe you could find something used on eBay to stretch your dollars a little more.

Good luck,

Matt

thank you very much Matt, muddslinger, and Charles. now i know, and anyone else, that it's best to save money to buy a good camera and accessories plus possibly a extended warrantee.

I purschased a canon G2 last year, which I am very happy with, the main reason I bought this camera was for it's macro ability for bonsai work and it's ability to switch to manual to enable all of the camera's settings to be adjusted.
It's probably over the top for my level of photographic ability but I figured what the hell just give me a camera with everything I'll work out how to use the damn thing one day.

Hi!

Whit a 100 $ you can't get a good digital camera. Put at least 300 $ into your budget as Matt said. You bought Digital Ixus V3/Powershot s230 about half year ago and it's very good camera and it had won all tests which I have seen. That could you get for 300$, I paid from mine 500$ . And if wanna invest 500$ for your camera buy Powershot s400, It's same as mine but whit 4 megapixels and 3X optical zoom. Those I would recomm from Canon but Olympus and Minolta have also very good models. And if You want to put 700$ buy Canon G5 or G3. G5 replaced G3 as Powershot s400 replaced Ixus V3/Powershot s230.
